VCI corrosion protection: how to protect metal products during transport and storage

Damaged metal components can result in costly delays, rework and customer complaints. VCI packaging offers an effective way to protect products from corrosion during transport and storage, but only when the right solution is selected and used correctly. This guide explains how VCI works, when it's the right choice and the key factors to consider for reliable protection.

What is VCI and how does it protect metal components?

VCI stands for Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor. These corrosion-inhibiting substances are incorporated into packaging materials such as plastic film, bags and treated paper.

When the packaging is sealed, VCI molecules disperse into the enclosed space and form a protective layer on exposed metal surfaces. This helps reduce the electrochemical reactions that cause corrosion. Because the molecules move through the air, they can also reach recesses and cavities, provided there is a clear path to the metal surface.

For VCI protection to work effectively, the packaging must be intact and properly sealed. Frequent air exchange can reduce the concentration of protective molecules. VCI also does not protect against water entering the package, punctures or mechanical damage during transport.

Rust vs. corrosion: why the difference matters when choosing VCI?

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, rust and corrosion are not the same thing. Rust specifically affects iron and steel, while corrosion is a broader term that includes the deterioration of other metals such as aluminium, brass and copper. This distinction is important because not all VCI products protect all metal types. A solution designed for steel may not provide adequate protection for copper alloys or mixed-metal assemblies.

Before selecting a VCI product, always confirm that it is compatible with the metals and alloys you need to protect.

When is VCI the right choice?

VCI is ideal when metal components require temporary protection between manufacturing and end use.

Typical applications include:

  • Machined components awaiting assembly
  • Spare parts stored for future use
  • Metal products transported domestically or internationally
  • Machine components awaiting installation or commissioning

One of the benefits of VCI protection is simpler handling. Because it is a dry corrosion protection method, it can reduce the need for oiling and subsequent cleaning. This saves both time and labour. However, if components are destined for sensitive processes such as painting, coating or bonding, it is important to verify compatibility with the next production step.

When evaluating alternatives, look at the total cost of protection, including packing time, cleaning requirements and the potential cost of corrosion-related failures. The cheapest packaging solution is not always the most economical in the long run.

Questions to answer before choosing a VCI solution

For new or demanding transport flows, a trial pack with documented follow-up is a useful way to test your choice. Agree in advance on what will be checked on arrival, so both sender and recipient use the same criteria for success.

What are you protecting?
Identify the metal, alloy, surface treatment and any combinations of materials.

How long is protection needed?
Include transport, temporary storage and storage at the recipient’s site.

What conditions will the goods face?
Consider the transport route, temperature changes, humidity and possible exposure to salt.

How will the goods be packed?
Check dimensions, weight, cavities, sharp edges and how parts are positioned together.

What happens after packing?
Will the packaging be opened for inspection, and what surface requirements apply after unpacking?

How to choose the right VCI packaging

The best VCI solution depends on several factors:

  • The type of metal being protected
  • The shape and size of the component
  • Storage and transport conditions
  • Whether the packaging needs to be opened and resealed

Different components and applications require different types of VCI packaging. Below are some examples of suitable solutions and what to consider:

  • Small spare parts and machined components
VCI bags – choose the right size and consider puncture resistance and sealing.
  • Components that require inspection during storage Resealable
VCI bags – consider opening procedures and whether additional VCI is needed.

  • Long or irregularly shaped components
VCI tubing or VCI film – ensure a proper fit and tight sealing of ends and joints.

  • Several metal parts in one box
VCI paper for wrapping or interleaving – check the treated side, positioning and outer packaging.
  • Palletised goods and large components
VCI pallet covers – ensure proper sealing at the bottom and protection against sharp edges.

  • Components requiring cushioning
VCI bubble wrap – consider mechanical protection and material compatibility.

  • Additional protection in enclosed spaces
VCI foam or emitters – adjust the protection volume and placement, and check compatibility.

Always follow the recommended instructions for the specific VCI product, including usage method and required material quantity.

How to pack with VCI: 6 steps for reliable protection

1. Start with clean, dry components

Do not seal visible moisture, salts or dirt inside the packaging. Check whether residues from machining fluids or cleaning agents are compatible with your chosen VCI solution. VCI does not remove rust that is already present. Take extra care when moving cold parts into a warm, humid packing area. Make sure the surfaces are dry before sealing.

2. Avoid contamination during handling

Use clean, dry gloves when handling sensitive metal surfaces. Fingerprints can introduce moisture and salts even after a component has been cleaned.

3. Place the VCI material where it can work

Follow the product instructions for the amount of VCI, protection volume and distance from the metal. If the paper is treated on one side only, make sure that side faces the component. Ordinary plastic layers between the VCI material and the metal may block the molecules. Check the complete packing arrangement, including interleaving and cushioning materials.

4. Prevent damage to the packaging

Sharp edges and heavy parts can puncture bags or film. Use appropriate edge protection and secure the components, while allowing the VCI to reach the metal surfaces. Inspect the package after packing. Even a small hole can reduce the reliability of an otherwise well-planned solution.

5. Seal the packaging correctly

Use the sealing method specified for the material, such as heat sealing or a designated closure. Check joints, corners and the underside of larger packages.

6. Make the next step easy

Record the packing date, the material used and how the package should be resealed after inspection. Store unused VCI material in its original packaging according to the supplier’s instructions. A short packing instruction with pictures can help your teams work consistently across shifts and repeat deliveries.

Important: Boxon’s VCI tape is an information tape that tells recipients how to handle the package. The tape itself does not provide corrosion protection.

How long does VCI protection last?

VCI solutions can provide corrosion protection during extended transport and storage periods, and some products are designed for protection lasting several years. However, there is no universal protection period.

The actual performance depends on:

  • The VCI product used
  • Packaging integrity
  • The condition of the components
  • Storage and transport conditions
  • Exposure to humidity and temperature fluctuations

It is also important to distinguish between the shelf life of an unused VCI product and the protection period after packaging.

Storage conditions for an unopened roll do not tell you how long a shipment will remain protected at sea. Before selecting a solution, ask for documented protection conditions for your specific product and transport flow, and evaluate the entire logistics chain, including possible package openings, outdoor storage and maximum transport duration.

VCI vs. desiccants: which corrosion protection method should you choose?

VCI helps inhibit corrosion on accessible metal surfaces. Desiccants, such as silica gel, absorb moisture inside the package. They do different jobs and can sometimes be used together.

  • VCI
Inhibits corrosion on accessible metal surfaces. Consider the metal type, amount of VCI, placement and sealing.
  • Desiccants Absorb moisture.
Consider moisture load, absorption capacity and transport time.
  • Barrier packaging
Limits the amount of water vapour entering the package. Consider barrier properties, joints and sealing.
