Don’t let packaging become a Black Friday bottleneck

Black Week starts long before the first order comes in. For e-commerce businesses and other companies handling high order volumes, the weeks leading up to the shopping peak are crucial. This is when you create the right conditions to manage the surge in orders when it arrives. As demand increases, so does the pressure on warehousing, logistics and packing. Running out of packaging, delayed replenishment or an inefficient packing process can quickly create unnecessary bottlenecks.

That’s why our most important advice is simple: Make sure you have the right packaging in stock – in the right quantities and well in advance.

But stocking up doesn’t have to mean filling your warehouse with a wide range of different packaging. With a little forward planning and smart, flexible solutions, you can prepare your business for higher volumes while reducing unnecessary material use and simplifying the packing process.

Plan before order volumes peak

Start by looking at previous years’ sales and your forecasts for this year’s Black Week. Which products sell the most? Which packaging sizes do you use most frequently? Which materials are essential to keeping your packing operations running smoothly?

Planning your purchases well in advance reduces the risk of having to deal with packaging shortages at the last minute, when demand is at its highest. It also makes it easier to order the right quantities and build a packaging inventory that actually matches your needs.

Stock up – but stock up smart

More orders don’t necessarily mean you need more types of packaging in stock. In fact, smart standard packaging solutions can make it easier to handle a wide variety of orders during busy periods.

Choose flexible packaging that can be used for products of different sizes. A corrugated box with adjustable creases, for example, can be adapted in height to fit its contents. This means the same box can be used for several types of shipments, reducing the number of packaging variants you need to keep in stock.

Get your packing process ready for a faster pace

Every minute counts during Black Week. When order volumes increase, even small steps in the packing process can have a significant impact. Review your packing stations before the peak season begins. Are the most commonly used packaging products within easy reach? Are the boxes quick to assemble? Can sealing be made faster? Are there any steps that can be removed or simplified? Self-locking boxes, smart closures and packaging with integrated features can reduce the number of packing steps and help make the process smoother.

The goal is simple: when the orders start coming in, your packaging should already be in place and your packing process ready to go.

Choose the right packaging for the right contents

Choosing the right packaging size becomes even more important when you’re shipping large volumes. An unnecessarily large box or bag can mean more empty space, more void fill and more air being transported.

Flexible packaging that can be adapted to its contents makes it easier to optimise each shipment – without having to keep a large number of different sizes in stock. It’s a smart way to streamline packing while also helping to reduce material use and improve transport efficiency. Packing more sustainably isn’t only about the material your packaging is made from. It’s also about how much material you use, how well the packaging fits the product and how efficiently it can be packed, stored and transported.

By choosing flexible standard solutions, reducing unnecessary empty space and avoiding excess packaging, you can make a real difference – especially during Black Week, when every small improvement is multiplied across a large number of shipments.

Line

Standard doesn’t have to mean impersonal

Smart standard packaging is practical during periods of high order volumes – but that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on the brand experience.

Adding a label or logo can quickly give standard packaging a clearer identity. It’s a simple way to create brand recognition and a more personal feel without adding unnecessary complexity to the packing process.

Don’t forget about returns

Higher sales volumes can also mean more returns. That’s why it makes sense to think one step ahead when choosing your packaging.

Packaging that is easy for the recipient to open and reseal can be used for both delivery and potential returns. This makes things easier for the customer while also reducing the need for additional packaging.

Are you ready for Black Week?

Once Black Week gets underway, your focus should be on your customers and fulfilling orders – not scrambling to find packaging at the last minute. Plan your needs, review your packing process and choose smart standard solutions that work for a variety of shipments.

Stock up in time – but stock up smart. Then you’ll be ready when the orders start rolling in.
