Corrugated or wooden pallet collars – which is right for your flow?

Pallet collars are a well-established solution for transport, storage and material handling. But not all flows require the same type of packaging – or the weight and performance offered by a traditional wooden pallet collar. Corrugated pallet collars and lids provide a lighter alternative for applications where easy handling, low packaging weight and efficient packing flows are important.

Our corrugated pallet collars are designed for the 800 × 600 mm format, with a collar height of 200 mm, and are available in two versions: Lightweight for regular requirements and Heavy Duty for more demanding applications.

It is not about always choosing corrugated board over wood. It is about choosing the right pallet collar for the right flow. The choice of solution should always be based on the goods and the requirements of the specific flow.

Lower weight – easier handling

One of the clearest differences between corrugated pallet collars and traditional wooden pallet collars is the weight. In the 800 × 600 mm format, Lightweight weighs 0.85 kg and Heavy Duty 1.3 kg, compared with 5.92 kg for the corresponding wooden pallet collar.

Lighter packaging can simplify daily handling for employees who assemble, move and pack pallet collars. The corrugated alternatives also reduce the risk of pinching compared with traditional wooden pallet collars.

At the same time, the lower weight means that corrugated pallet collars do not offer the same load and stacking capacity as the corresponding wooden pallet collar.

Lightweight or Heavy Duty?

Different products and transport flows place different demands on packaging. That is why our corrugated pallet collars are available in two versions.

  • Lightweight is suitable for applications where lower weight and easy handling are prioritised and where the goods do not require a more robust construction.
  • Heavy Duty is designed for more demanding applications where higher performance is required, but where a corrugated solution is still a relevant alternative.

This makes it possible to adapt the solution to the goods and the requirements for handling, storage and transport.

For transport, storage and internal logistics

The solution can, for example, be suitable for components, spare parts and other products transported or handled on pallets. It can be used in warehouses and internal logistics, between production facilities and for outbound deliveries.

The format also makes it possible to integrate the solution into existing pallet-based logistics and packing flows. When not in use, the pallet collar can be folded flat, reducing the space required for storage and handling.

An alternative for one-way and export flows

In closed return systems, wooden pallet collars can be a good option because they can circulate and be used repeatedly. But not all pallet collars are returned.

For exports, direct-to-customer deliveries or other one-way flows, it may therefore be relevant to consider what packaging is actually needed. When there is no return handling and the full performance of wood is not required, a lighter corrugated pallet collar can be an interesting alternative.

A complement to returnable packaging

Wood and corrugated board do not have to be an either-or choice. A business can, for example, use wooden pallet collars in established return flows and corrugated pallet collars for deliveries where the packaging will not be returned.

Corrugated pallet collars can also be a practical complement for businesses using returnable packaging, for example when the regular returnable packaging is not available when needed. This makes it possible to adapt the packaging to different flows and solutions within the same operation.

Corrugated board fits established recycling flows

Corrugated board is a well-established packaging material that can be handled in existing collection and recycling streams for paper- and fibre-based packaging, provided that local sorting guidelines are followed.

This can make handling easier for the recipient, particularly in businesses that already handle large volumes of corrugated board and other paper-based transport packaging.

Corrugated or wooden pallet collars?

There is no single solution that suits every application. The choice should therefore start with the flow itself, rather than the material. Sometimes the right solution is to use both wood and corrugated board – in different parts of the logistics flow.

Some questions to consider before making your choice are: What goods will be packed? How heavy are they? What does the transport and handling process look like? Will the packaging be returned, or will it remain with the recipient? And do all deliveries really need the same type of pallet collar?

Based on these factors, you can determine whether Lightweight, Heavy Duty or a traditional wooden pallet collar is the right solution.

  • Wooden pallet collars are robust and well established and remain relevant for demanding applications and return flows where the packaging is used many times.

  • Corrugated pallet collars can be an alternative when lower weight, easier handling or one-way logistics are prioritised and the application does not require the full performance of wood.

For businesses handling large volumes of packaging, it can be valuable to review where the full performance of wood is really needed – and where a lighter solution could make handling easier.

Could corrugated pallet collars be right for your flow?

Which pallet collar is most suitable depends on the goods, handling requirements and the structure of your logistics flow. Here we answer some common questions.

Q: When are corrugated pallet collars suitable instead of wooden ones?

A: Corrugated pallet collars can be an alternative when lower weight and easier handling are prioritised and the full performance of wood is not required. They may, for example, be relevant for components and spare parts, internal logistics, exports and one-way flows where the packaging is not returned.

Consider how pallet collars are currently used in your business. Are some shipped in one-way flows? Are there products that do not require the full performance of wood? Or do you have different flows that could benefit from different types of pallet collars?

Q: Are corrugated pallet collars resistant to moisture?

A: Like all corrugated board, they are sensitive to moisture and are therefore not recommended for use in damp or wet conditions.

Q: What load can corrugated pallet collars handle?

Add verified load and stacking capacity for each version. Awaiting information from Procurement.

Q: Can corrugated pallet collars be used in return flows?

A: The most suitable solution depends on the structure of the return flow and the requirements placed on the packaging. Wooden pallet collars are well established in flows where packaging circulates and is reused, while corrugated board can be an alternative in other parts of the operation.

It therefore does not have to be a choice between wood and corrugated board for the entire business. Different flows can have different requirements. In many flows, wood is still the right choice. But when lower weight and easier handling are prioritised and the full performance of wood is not required, there is another option.
